Optimizing your pages for SEO does not only concern your home or product pages. Each and every page of your online store must be optimized using a combination of keywords. When creating your categories, you will have to think about their positioning is search engine result pages (SERPs).
To create or modify categories, head onto the Products > Categories section.
When establishing your keyword strategy, it will be important to highlight the chosen keywords in all available text fields.
Your category name
The name of your category will contain your targeted keywords. For our example, the chosen keyword will be "Cups and Bottles Bento Boxes":
It is essential to fill in the different text fields available:
- Category name (displayed in the menu)
- Category name when hovering over (displayed when hovering over the menu)
The product list customization
Using the same method, the name of your page should include your keywords, as well as your category presentation text. This content will allow you to describe the products that are available in this category, but to also make it relevant for Google's crawling bots.
To do so, click onto the "Add a block" button
⚠️ Watch out
Once you have added your text, remember to save your text by clicking on the "Save" button:
💡 Good to know
We recommend a minimum of 200 characters for the optimization of your category text. This will allow your visitor to get more information about the specific category, as well as the type of products they will be able to find within that category. This optimized content will also make your category page appear more relevant to Google's bots.
The SEO
To access your SEO configuration, click onto the "Display advanced options (classification, referencing...)" button
Once this tab is open and following this initial logic, you can simply add your targeted keywords in the remaining available fields:
These fields will allow you to optimize the last missing elements of your category page for SEO:
- The page title
- The URL of the page
- The meta description (description phrase visible in the code of the page)
⚠️ Watch Out
A maximum number of characters is recommended for the title of the page (60) and its meta description (160). Make sure you respect the number of characters, so that your texts appear in full in Google' search results. If not, the mention "..." will replace the extra characters in the Google Preview.
Please note, it is not required to have the name of your store in the title of the page.
It is also strongly advised to work on your meta descriptions as precisely as possible.
Every page of your website must have a unique meta description.
💡 Good to know
Creating an Excel file will allow you to create all your category texts (titles, descriptions...) in one single document. You will be able to work on all of your categories upfront. Once your file is ready, all you will have to do is copy and paste these texts!
