Google Ads is a powerful tool for driving qualified traffic to your online store and increasing your sales. However, to fully leverage your advertising campaigns, it’s essential to track your visitors’ interactions on your website. Whether it’s to re-engage your customers through remarketing or to analyze completed conversions, Google Ads tracking provides you with a clear view of your performance and helps you fine-tune your strategies.

To follow the steps in this tutorial, log in to your Google Ads account or create an account with Google if you don’t already have one.

Google Ads Remarketing

Remarketing (or retargeting) is a method that allows you to re-engage a visitor who didn’t convert on your store. It involves strategically displaying your ads to audiences who visited your store but didn’t complete a purchase, as they browse Google or its partner websites.

Create your Google Ads tracking tag

In your Google Ads interface, here are the steps to follow :

  1. Go to the Tools and settings tab, then Audience manager.
  2. Click on Your data sources.
  3. Then, in the Google Ads tag, click Set up tag.
  4. Select standard remarketing data, so that your tag can collect general visit data.
  5. Then click on Save and continue.
  6. In Tag setup, select the Install the tag yourself method.
  7. In the drop-down pane, simply copy your ID (without the "AW-") to your clipboard and click on Continue.

Activate Google Remarketing in your administration area

Go to Settings > Tags & External Services of your dashboard, in the Google Remarketing module, click on Activate the service, then paste your ID into the dedicated field.

All you have to do now is wait until Google registers a sufficient number of users on your store (at least a hundred) to start recording data in your Google Ads space, and thus start your remarketing campaigns. 

Google Ads Conversion

Conversion tracking is essential for measuring key actions taken by your visitors, such as making a purchase or subscribing to your newsletter. By installing this tracking tag, you can accurately assess the results of your campaigns and optimize your return on investment.

Create your Google Conversion tag

In your Google Ads interface, follow these steps to generate your Google Conversion tag:

  1. Go to the Goals section
    Navigate to the Goals section of your Google Ads account.

  2. Create a Conversion Action
    Click the + New Conversion Action button to create a new tracking action.

  3. Select the Conversion Type
    Choose the Website option to indicate that the conversion action takes place on your site.

  4. Set Up a Conversion Action Tag

    • Enter your website's URL to proceed.
    • Select the goal or action you want to track, such as Purchase (or any other relevant action).
  5. Retrieve the Conversion Action Tag
    Obtain the action tag and the Conversion ID (with the "AW-").

Activate Google Conversion in your administration area

Go to Settings > Tags & External Services of your dashboard, in the Google Conversion module, click on Activate the service, then paste your ID into the dedicated field.
